COMMITTEE & TRUSTEES

Shortly after the Institute was built its welfare was placed into the hands of a group of Trustees.   The first trustees appointed on 26 January 1898 were:
  • Henry John Gepp (Vicar of St Mary's Church) - ex officio (ie. appointed by virtue of his office and status).
  • James Walker Larnach (owner of Adderbury House) - appointed by the owner or owners of Adderbury House.
  • Hugh William Stilgoe (who's descendent currently own Adderbury Grounds Farm) - appointed by Adderbury East Parish Council.
  • Samuel Choyce (village carpenter) - appointed by Adderbury West Parish Council.
  • James Smith (no occupation) - appointed by the Church Wardens.

The deed states that if any of these persons ceases to be a trustee a new trustee shall be appointed in writing by the body/person as indicated above.   Any change to the deed rules must be approved by four out of the five Trustees.

Parish and District Councillor John Harper recently resigned his position as a Trustee.   The Parish Council nominated Parish Councillor Graham Harris as his replacement.

Currently the following people take on the role of Trustees and custodians of Adderbury Institute.

Rev Stephen Fletcher Vicar of Adderbury
Mr Ray Perry Owner of Adderbury House
Cllr Keith Mitchell Parish, District and County Councillor
Cllr Graham Harris Parish Councillor
Mr Noel Towe appointed by the Church Wardens

The on-going management of Adderbury Institute is in the hands of a Management Committee who operate under these instructions, dated October 22, 1898:

There shall be a permanent President who shall be an ex-officia member of the Committee and shall be appointed by the Trustees whenever a vacancy shall occur.

There shall be a Treasurer and a Secretary to be appointed annually.   The first appointment shall be made by the Trustees and all subsequent appointments by the Committee.

The entire management of the Institute shall be vested in a Committee who shall frame such rules and regulations from time to time as shall be necessary subject nevertheless to the approval of the Trustees.

The Committee shall consist of eight members besides the President.   The first appointments thereto to be made by the Trustees and subsequent appointments as to two of the members by the Committee (who shall appoint two of their in number one of whom shall be the Vicar of the Parish for the time bring or his Curate in charge) and as to the rest of the members by the members of the Institute.

All the property of the Institute shall be vested in the Trustees.

The Management Committee for 2008-9 is made up as follows:

Andy Green Chairman
Dr David White MBE Treasurer and Bookings Secretary
Mike Dolamore MBE Secretary
Parish Councillor Rhoda Woodward
Gary Fisher
Oliver Davies
Derek Fearne

Villagers will be aware that the future of the Institute is under discussion in certain quarters.   However the Institute Management Committee is tasked with the current maintenance and running of the Institute on behalf of the Trustees.   As such the Committee is apolitical and has no say or direct impact in future plans; its sole concerns are with ensuring that the building remains fit for use in the future, and is managed and run effectively, until directed otherwise by the Trustees.

Villagers may have read that the Institute Committee has voted that the Institute is no longer suitable for purpose.   This is not true: no such vote has taken place, and the Institute Committee is apolitical on this issue.
